Star player: James Thompson

Broomhedge Football Club

James Thompson (1)

Larne Tech O.B. V Broomhedge (Steel & Sons Cup Round 1)
2.30 pm kick off referee Ken Gill

Broomhedge in the spirit of cup games arrived in Larne early which gave the players a chance to take a walk around the pitch taking in the great set up that Larne Tech boast.
The game itself started and within the first minute Larne had the Broomhedge keeper working but Green was up to it and made a great save putting the ball round the post for a corner.
Weather conditions were good apart from a very strong swirling wind which was creating some problems for both teams. After a short spell of pressure from Larne it was Broomhedge's turn and Thompson went close after quick counter attack.
In the first 15 minutes both teams were playing some great football which would have pleased the watching crowd.
Then on 17 mins a some what dubious foul by Walker on the edge of the 18 yard box lead to the opening goal and a silly booking not for the foul but for kicking the ball away in frustration, Walker was having a great game as sweeper and was clearly outraged by this decision, the resulting free kick exposed a clear lack of organisation in the away sides defence as it was swung in and met by a totally unmarked Larne player who easily headed home unchallenged.
This set back didnt seem to dent Broomhedge's confidence too much and they kept playing some good football, a move down the right wing from Walker, Flynn and Thompson almost paid of.
On 25 minutes Larne OB were awarded a penalty when Darren Lynn not for the first time in the game got caught the wrong side of the attacking midfielder. Larne's number 9 gave Green no chance.
Broomhedge's defensive frailties were put in the spot light again in the 27th minute when a corner from the left was easily headed in with no challenge from any Broomhedge player.
Addis came on for Vaughan on 31 mins to try a different attacking approach and put more pressure on the home side.
On 40 mins great individual play by Flynn gave Cummins an opportunity, he hit a great shot which was well saved by the man between the posts for Larne. The corner was driven in and caught by Flynn for Broomhedge on the volley flying just wide.
Down at the other end of the pitch a great goal line clearance by Murphy and a quick reflex save from Green
Green immediately cleared a long ball upfield and a mistake by the Larne center back let in Broomhedge striker Addis he managed to get to the ball just before the outcoming keeper who was fully committed to the challenge Addis flicked the ball round him and he was upended right on the edge of the box leaving the Ref a very easy decision to make and he had no hesitation in sending the Larne keeper for an early bath.
Now to many a football managers, players, coaches or even supporter this should have worked in the favour of the away side but just as Broomhedge thought they had a chance to get back into the game Larne immediately went up the field and scored their fourth much to the dismay of the Broom Manager.
Half Time :- Larne Tech O.B. 4 - Broomhedge 0
The second half started as if Broomhedge were the team a man down, Broomhedge players had lost all composure and could not match the Larne players movement off the ball or their desire to win, for some reason they seemed to have thrown in the towel or waved the white flag which allowed Larne to score another three goals before Thompson could reply with a superb volley. This game proves that there is still a lot of postions still up for grabs in the Broomhedge starting line-up.
If Broomhedge were being marked in this game like a school report it would read....................
B- MUST DO BETTER !!!!!!!!!
All in all a good learning curve for the players and hopefully they can take some things from this game into their league campaign which begins this saturday against Lisnally at home.
