Broomhedge Football Club

James Thompson (2)

Broomhedge travelled to Lurgan Town on Saturday for their first league game in two weeks due to cup competitions. This was always going to be a hard contest as Lurgan Town had recently been in the top flight of this league and am sure are keen to make a quick return.

Broomhedge were slow to start with Lurgan making all the running early on but with no clear opportunities on goal. Broomhedge started to settle into the game and the midfield trio of Donaghy, Cummins and Houston started to make both their passes and tackles count. Most of Broomhedge’s attacking came down the right with Walker and Flynn causing the home defence a lot of problems.

However it was Lurgan who had the better of the early opportunities with a shot in the 17th minute rebounding off the post after they beat the offside trap and a minute later had an effort cleared off the line.

This sparked Broomhedge into life and as a result of a series of quick one two passing between the midfield and strikers Broomhedge were awarded a free-kick when the Lurgan centre back upended Addis 20 yards from goal. Up stepped Broomhedge’s top goalscorer James Thompson who rattled the crossbar with the goalie well beaten.

Broomhedge began to dominate this game and their football at times was exceptional. However just as a goal for Broomhedge was imminent the Lurgan striker beat the offside trap and slotted coolly past Morris in the Broomhedge goal in the 32nd minute.

Broomhedge have definitely found a new attitude this season and they quickly got back on the attack. They pressed for an equaliser with Addis and Thompson starting to find their range with both their passing and shots on goal. Some lovely interchange between Houston, Flynn and Thompson resulted in Flynn hitting the bar with a 25 yard strike.

Then right on half-time Lurgan won a corner on the right which was driven to the front post. The ball was headed goalwards and managed to find its way into the net after a scramble in the six yard box with the final touch coming off a broomhedge defender.

Half-Time Lurgan 2 Broomhedge 0

The second half started like the first half with Lurgan making the early running. It took a while for broomhedge to get going but when they did they produced some fantastic football. However chances were few and far between for both sides. Notably Morris pulling off a fantastic save to keep Broomhedge very much in the game.

In the 62nd minute Houston played a sublime through ball for Thompson who raced clear of the Lurgan defence and finished in style from an acute angle.

Broomhedge pushed forward and this time it was Murphy and Lynn on the left linking with the strikers causing Lurgan problems. However as Broomhedge pushed for the equaliser they left themselves exposed at the back. A great 50 yard run from Lurgan’s right-back evaded several tackles and broke into the box and regardless of Lynn’s best efforts to stop him he drove the ball across goal. Morris was at full stretch to save the shot/cross but could only direct the ball into the path of the oncoming striker who was unmarked at the back post.

Broomhedge kept the pressure on and had several good opportunities to get a goal back. With 10 minutes to go Addis raced onto a through ball and challenged the goalie in a 50-50 tackle with the striker winning the ball first before colliding with the goalie. He was deemed to have fouled the goalie and harshly shown a straight red card. With only minutes left on the clock the referee evened the contest up by showing a straight red card to a Lurgan Town sub for an off the ball incident.

On the stroke of full time Donaghy found Thompson in space on the left and the striker cut in to score his second of the day with another good finish.

Credit must go to all the players who never gave up and fought to the very end.

Final score Lurgan Town 3 Broomhedge 2.
